Africa is a land of mystery. The diversity of culture throughout the dark continent is a portrayal of humankind’s evolution from its beginnings to modern times. The native inhabitants of the continent are a conglomeration of tribal communities, but in the fifteenth century the Europeans sent explorers to Africa in their quest for expansion. In the southwest, along the Gulf of Guinea, is The Ivory Coast. In the mid eighteen hundreds this land of abundant resources captured the interest of the French government who established a colony there. The Ivory Coast was subject to the crown of France for over 100 years until it gained its independence in 1960.

France’s influence on The Ivory Coast is such that even now, with an independent government, the African nation has maintained firm ties with its European benefactors. In 1985 they officially established themselves as La Republique de Côte d’Ivoire (French translation for the Republic of the Ivory Coast) and are listed on the United Nations registry as such. Although British and American news agencies still refer to it as The Ivory Coast, presumably to minimize confusion, the country is properly known in any language as Côte d’Ivoire.

It is an exotic country that is a mosaic of coastal forests laced with inland lagoons that give way to the savannas and grasslands of the interior. The climate in Côte d’Ivoire is warm and humid with three distinct seasons. They are warm and dry from November to March, hot and dry from March to May, and hot and wet from June to October.

The agriculture of the Ivory Coast makes it one of the most prosperous regions in Africa. In the south, on the Ebrie Lagoon, is a land mass of converging islands and peninsulas. This is where the city of Abidjan was built. Abidjan is a booming business and cultural center, and was once the former capital of Ivory Coast. It is known as the “Paris of Africa” with fashionable shopping districts and world class hotels, and is billed as one of the safest most desireable tourist destinations in West Africa.

Abidjan international airport is serviced by Air France and Swissair, as well as other local airlines. There are taxis, buses and trains available in the terminal. These options are inexpensive, but safety precautions need to be taken when using these modes of transportation. Car rentals are also available.

There is a good selection of hotel accommodations in Abidjan. The list includes Hotel Tiama, Novotel Abidjan, African Queen Lodge, Ibis Abidjan Marcory, and the Hotel Ivoire Intercontinental to name a few.

Vacationing in Africa would be considered adventure travel by most. The cultures there are diverse and, at times, are at odds with each other. But, going beyond one’s own boundaries and experiencing the customs of a different culture can certainly help in bridging the gaps in a conflicted world. Abidjan is a city that has effectively integrated its cultural diversity into a functioning society. Travelers would benefit from the education of visiting there.
